When a director like Shakun Batra sets out to make a film about dysfunctional and complicated modern-day relationships, you can't help but have high hopes.
With Ghahriyan, unfortunately, Batra failed to make a mark. What starts as a promising venture does not end on the same note.
Deepika Padukone is the only saving grace with her remarkable performance.
Batra forms the basis of the film in the first ten minutes. You think you're loving it already.
You see some similarities with Batra's great work Kapoor & Sons through the background score and character development.
But soon, you'll realize you have to be patient for that first wow moment.
You keep waiting for it but by the time it arrives, the train has already left the station.
Gehraiyaan is a complex tale of love and deceit, but it gets a bit more complicated in search of depth.
Its central characters Alisha (Deepika Padukone) and Zain (Siddhant Chaturvedi) carry emotional baggage, often stemming from childhood trauma.
Alisha comes from a broken family and is unable to come out of her past.
For a yoga instructor who wakes up at 4:00 a.m., that's an inappropriate number of anti-anxiety pills.
Though the Indian audience has grown enough to welcome the complex and uncomfortable notions of modern-day relationships, they will still find it a bit difficult to sit through a slow-motion film like Gehraiyaan.
Thankfully, the story picks up pace in the second half.
Background score is present only when it is needed.
But when it is it works wonders.
Gehren's script didn't match the hype that the trailer had generated.
What matters is the runtime of the movie.
2 hours and 28 minutes is a long stretch for a film that doesn't even have a moment of comic relief.
Talking about acting, Padukone has definitely matured as an actor.
Her eyes serve as a powerful asset to portray her character's vulnerability and anxiety.
She is looking very beautiful in no-makeup avatar. At the same time, Ananya Pandey, who plays Tia, still has a lot of work to do.
She is basically playing her real-life "rich kid from South Mumbai" for the most part of the film.
Dheeraj Kavya has impressed with her natural acting as Karan, whatever the director has given her.
Would have been nice if they had more screen time.
But the filmmakers will definitely keep an eye on him for their future projects.
Siddhant Chaturvedi stole the show. With his stellar performances, he has proved that he is here to stay.
He is good with his dialogues but could have been better in the romantic ones.
He underplays like a pro and still keeps you hooked till the end.
The only time he goes a little overboard is during scenes when his character calms down.
Being Naseeruddin Shah, Naseeruddin Shah is brilliant.
His arrival on the screen comes as a breath of fresh air.
Even though the film's dialogues are nothing to write at home, the only one you will remember is the one delivered by Shah's character.
The best thing about the film is its cinematic treatment.
For example, plush yachts are a perfect example of how places can be used as characters in a movie.
The same can be said for Mumbai's iconic Taj Mahal Palace Hotel.
The childhood montages of the main characters are effortlessly presented whenever the story requires it.
Batra must be credited for introducing ocean waves as an important part of the film.
Beautifully shot by cinematographer Kaushal Shah, the waves act as a symbolic expression of the film.
Editor Nitesh Bhatia deserves praise for using them as a great transition tool.
Batra could have done much better with the kind of characters he developed and the subject he decided to talk about.
He wowed the audience with uncanny plot twists. By the time he can connect with you, it's too late.
Watch this for Deepika Padukone and amazing songs that will touch your heart when the film fails.
